Obama Addresses Veterans At VFW Convention

AUDIE CORNISH, HOST:

This week, President Obama and Mitt Romney are addressing the annual convention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. The president spoke today; Romney, tomorrow. The VFW is the oldest and largest veterans group. About 5,000 members were on hand today in Reno, Nevada. The president's speech was different from his address the last time he spoke to this gathering, in 2009. Then, his focus was on the two ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Today, he was cheered when he spoke of the end of combat operations in Iraq, and when he said this:

NCAA Hits Penn State With Unprecedented Penalties

They NCAA announced severe penalties against Penn State's football program on Monday in the wake of the sex abuse scandal involving assistant coach Jerry Sandusky. The NCAA banned the team from bowl games for the next four years, stripped it of all victories between 1998 and 2011 and fined the school $60 million.

50 Years Ago, Telstar Debuted Live Video From Space

Audie Cornish and Robert Siegel note that the first satellite to bounce TV pictures from Europe to the U.S. and back was inaugurated 50 years ago on Monday. Telstar allowed live images to be seen instantly on both sides of the Atlantic.
