In an release sent late Friday afternoon, Cameron University announced the selection of Dr. John McArthur as the institution's 17th president. He will take over effective July 1, replacing the retiring Dr. Cindy Ross.

McArthur has served as Cameron's provost since 2006, overseeing the academic areas of the university and working on major university initiatives. Prior to that appointment, he served as the dean of CU's School of Science and Technology.

McArthur's selection marks the end of a process that began in January with the announcement of Ross's impending retirement. He was chosen from "a variety of solid, capable candidates," as OU Board of Regents chairman Richard Dunning said in the release, one of whom was former Oklahoma Lieutenant Governor and Duncan native Jari Askins.

KCCU will have more on McArthur's appointment in the coming days.
