Hugo Lake Water Fight Continues

Hugo, OK – A contract for the city of Hugo to sell up to 75 billion gallons of water from Hugo Lake to the Dallas-area suburb of Irving each year has angered other north Texas water providers.

Several permit applications and federal lawsuits have been filed in an attempt to end Oklahoma's ban on selling water to Texas. Each seeks to obtain some of the 1.4 million acre-feet of ``excess'' water that flows through the lake in far southeastern Oklahoma each year.

The most recent lawsuit was filed on August 8th in U.S. District Court in Muskogee and involves a contract approved a day earlier between officials in Hugo and Irving.

But other regional water providers view Irving as a renegade that is out to make a buck.
