KCCU - Lawton 89.3 FM (HD1 & 2) is operating at reduced power due to ice on the antenna. When ice forms on FM antenna structures, it causes the radiation to be focused back inwards (VSWR.) In extreme cases, this phenomenon can damage the antenna itself. When the computer detects VSWR above a certain ratio, power to the transmitter is shut off to prevent damage to the antenna. KCCU is currently using a low-wattage back-up transmitter.
We are at the mercy of the temperature, and once the freezing rain ceases and the temperature remains above 32F / 0C for several hours, we can return to 100%.
