The Movie Saoirse Ronan Has 'Seen A Million Times'

Originally published on Sat March 30, 2013 5:25 pm

The weekends on All Things Considered series Movies I've Seen A Million Times features filmmakers, actors, writers and directors talking about the movies that they never get tired of watching.

The movie that actor Saoirse Ronan, whose credits include the films Atonement, The Lovely Bones, Hanna and The Host — currently in theaters — could watch a million times is the Jane Austen-inspired comedy Clueless.

Interview Highlights

On when she first saw the movie

"I saw Clueless probably when I was about 8 or 9 years old. And, I had certain films that I would fall asleep so it was Clueless for quite a long time, and I used to just watch it every single night and knew every single line, every single quote."

On why she loves the performances in Clueless

"The performance by Alicia Silverstone is so kind of, it's so genuine, it seems like, you know, um, it's like people that you see in the valley, you know? The performances were so kind of fresh and the timing and everything was so great from each person that I think that will last a very long time."

LAURA SULLIVAN, HOST:

On this show, we've been asking filmmakers about movies they could watch again and again, including this one from the star of the adventure thriller "Hanna."

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "LOOKING OUT THE DIRTY OLD WINDOW")

UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN: (Singing) Looking out the dirty old window...

SAOIRSE RONAN: My name is Saoirse Ronan. I am an actress. And the movie that I've seen a million times is "Clueless." It's directed by Amy Heckerling, and it stars Alicia Silverstone and Paul Rudd and Brittany Murphy.

(SOUNDBITE OF MOVIE, "CLUELESS")

ALICIA SILVERSTONE: (as Cher) So, OK, you're probably going: Is this like a Noxzema commercial or what?

RONAN: Oh, God. I saw "Clueless" probably when I was about 8 or 9 years old. And I had certain films that I would fall asleep to. So, you know, it was "Clueless" for quite a long time. And I used to just watch it every single night and knew every single line, every single quote.

(SOUNDBITE OF MOVIE, "CLUELESS")

SILVERSTONE: (as Cher) Dionne and I were both named after great singers of the past who now do infomercials.

STACEY DASH: (as Dionne) Hello? That was a stop sign.

SILVERSTONE: I totally paused. Oh, as if.

RONAN: You're a virgin who can't drive.

(SOUNDBITE OF MOVIE, "CLUELESS")

SILVERSTONE: (as Cher) That was way harsh, Tai.

RONAN: Like the full-on Monet.

(SOUNDBITE OF MOVIE, "CLUELESS")

BRITTANY MURPHY: (as Tai) Do you think she's pretty?

SILVERSTONE: (as Cher) No. She's a full-on Monet.

RONAN: She's OK from far away.

(SOUNDBITE OF MOVIE, "CLUELESS")

SILVERSTONE: (as Cher) But up close, she's a big old mess.

RONAN: She's a big old mess.

(SOUNDBITE OF MOVIE, "CLUELESS")

SILVERSTONE: (as Cher) Let's ask a guy.

RONAN: There's so many great moments. And I literally love every single moment from start to finish of that film.

(SOUNDBITE OF MOVIE, "CLUELESS")

ELISA DONOGAN: (as Amber) Miss Stoeger, my plastic surgeon doesn't want me doing any activity where balls fly at my nose.

DASH: (as Dionne) Well, there goes your social life.

RONAN: It's about this girl called Cher who comes across this new kid at her school...

(SOUNDBITE OF MOVIE, "CLUELESS")

UNIDENTIFIED MAN: (as Character) Ladies, we have a new student with us. This is Tai Frazier.

RONAN: ...who clearly needs a makeover and needs to become popular, just like Cher in her eyes. So she decides to make her over with her friend Dionne.

(SOUNDBITE OF MOVIE, "CLUELESS")

DASH: (as Dionne) Cher's main thrill in life is a makeover, OK? It gives her a sense of control in a world full of chaos.

RONAN: I like when she's teaching her new words.

(SOUNDBITE OF MOVIE, "CLUELESS")

SILVERSTONE: (as Cher) That's another thing, Tai. We've got to work on your accent and vocabulary. See, sporadic means once in a while. Try and use it in a sentence today.

RONAN: And Paul Rudd comes in.

(SOUNDBITE OF MOVIE, "CLUELESS")

PAUL RUDD: (as Josh) Be seeing you.

RONAN: And she goes: Yeah, I hope not sporadically.

(SOUNDBITE OF MOVIE, "CLUELESS")

WALLACE SHAWN: (as Mr. Hall) Should all oppressed people be allowed refuge in America? Cher, two minutes.

RONAN: Well, you know, the Haitian speech that she makes?

(SOUNDBITE OF MOVIE, "CLUELESS")

SILVERSTONE: (as Cher) So, OK...

RONAN: So, OK. The Haitians need to come to America. And then she goes into this whole speech about this birthday party that she organized for her dad when he turned 50 and how some people didn't RSVP to this sit-down dinner, which is completely unheard of. And she decided that she just, you know, get to the kitchen...

(SOUNDBITE OF MOVIE, "CLUELESS")

SILVERSTONE: (as Cher) Redistribute the food, squish in extra place settings. But by the end of the day it was like, the more the merrier. And so if the government could just get to the kitchen, rearrange some things, we could certainly party with the Haitians.

RONAN: And she basically made such a strong point by telling it through this, you know, kind of surreal life that she lives in. And it was genius. It was brilliant. And her outfit, her yellow outfit that she had on, and the yellow (unintelligible) that matched her outfit that she had on her finger. It was just all fantastic.

(SOUNDBITE OF MOVIE, "CLUELESS")

ELISA DONOVAN: (as Amber) Mr. Hall, how can I answer that? The topic is Haiti, and she's talking about some little party.

SILVERSTONE: (as Cher) Hello? It was his 50th birthday.

RONAN: You know, it's so funny. And the performance by Alicia Silverstone is so kind of, it's so genuine, it seems, like, you know, it's like people that you see in the valley, you know?

(SOUNDBITE OF MOVIE, "CLUELESS")

SILVERSTONE: (as Cher) Wasn't my mom a Betty? She died when I was just a baby, a freak accident during a routine liposuction.

RONAN: The performances were so kind of fresh, and the timing and everything was so great from each person that I think that would last a very long time.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "SUPERMODEL")

JILL SOBULE: (Singing) I don't care what my teachers say. I'm gonna be a supermodel.

SULLIVAN: That's actress Saoirse Ronan talking about the movie she could watch a million times, "Clueless." Ronan's new film, "The Host," is currently in theaters.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "SUPERMODEL")

SOBULE: (Singing) And my hair will shine like the sea. Everyone will want to look... Transcript provided by NPR, Copyright NPR.
