New Director Named For Dallas Opera

Dallas, TX – The executive director of Columbia University's Miller Theatre has been named general director of The Dallas Opera.

Both groups today announced George Steel will begin his new job October 1st.

He'll be leading the company into its new home, the Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House at the Dallas Center for the Performing Arts. The opera house is set to open next year.

The company's inaugural performance, Verdi's Otello, starring tenor Clifton Forbis, will be October 23rd of 2009.

Steel is a 41-year-old Maryland native and Yale graduate who's a conductor, composer and impresario.

The search for a new general director began last fall, following the resignation of Karen Stone.
