Residents Moving To New Lawton/Ft. Sill Veterans Center

Lawton, Ok. – Construction started on the 200,000 square foot Lawton/Ft. Sill Veterans Center at the corner of East Gore and Flowermound Road in April, 2001. And now the facility that sits on 80 acres and includes 200 beds expects to welcome its first resident November 7.
According to Dwayne Webb who is in charge of the center, they took the keys on Tuesday night and have been hard at work since that time getting offices prepared and supplies in place. The staff is ready to welcome the first resident at 10 a.m. tomorrow, and will add one per day next week as well. The week of November 16, two residents a day will move in till the end of the year.
"Plans are to fill 50 beds, then hire more staff and fill 50 more beds, continuing until we have the 200 beds full," Webb said.
"We have the staff to care for the residents, and we already have lots of volunteers. But volunteers improve the quality of life and we can always use more volunteers."
Webb suggests people call in to put their name on the volunteer list and specify their areas of interest at that time so appropriate arrangements can be made for them to help out at the Veterans Center.
The number to call is (580) 351-6511.
Webb says this year there will be no Veterans Day ceremony held at the center but they will make arrangements to take residents in place by that time to the observance at the Ft. Sill National Cemetery.
