Severe Storms Hit Oklahoma

Oklahoma City, OK – Severe thunderstorms knocked down power poles and dropped so much hail, it looked like winter in part of the Oklahoma Panhandle.

There were no reports of structural damage or injuries with the storms, which pounded northern, western and central Oklahoma last night. Nearly 8,900 customers were without electricity in central sections of the state.

According to the National Weather Service, winds gusted to between 60 an 70 miles per hour, mainly west of Interstate 35.

In southwestern Oklahoma, winds gusted to 58 miles per hour near Mangum in Greer County and were clocked at 67 miles per hour near Velma in Stephens County.

In central Oklahoma, 8,848 Oklahoma Gas and Electric customers lost power. According to O-G-and-E's Web site, 8,057 of those were in the Oklahoma City metropolitan area.
