Texas Early Vote Increases, Sets Record

Austin,TX – The secretary of state's office says a whopping two-thirds of Texans who voted cast ballots early this year.

The record early-vote wave made for shorter lines and generally smooth polling place operations on Election Day Nov. 4.

Secretary of State spokesman Randall Dillard says people just really like the convenience of early voting.

More than eight million votes were cast in Texas in the presidential race that led to victory for Democrat Barack Obama. Republican John McCain carried Texas.

A record 5.35 million were cast early in Texas, or 66 percent of the total.

In the 2004 presidential race, 51 percent voted early in Texas.
