Texas' Senior Senator Says Resigning Early wouldn't Hurt Texas

Austin, TX – U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison isn't ready to say whether she will run for governor in 2010, but she said she doesn't think resigning from the Senate before her term ends at the end of 2012 would hurt Texas in Congress.

Talking with reporters after speaking yesterday at a luncheon hosted by the University of Texas, the Republican said she believes, quote, ``that if I did decide to step down in order to run for governor, that Texas would be actually well positioned because John Cornyn will have had a full term.''

Cornyn won his second six-year term Tuesday.

The Austin American-Statesman reports Hutchison said she can't say whether she is running because she hasn't filed a campaign treasurer with the state.
